How semester GPA works

Your semester GPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points you earned by the total number of credit hours you took. Each letter grade carries a grade point value. On the standard 4.0 scale an A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, a C is worth 2.0, a D is worth 1.0 and an F is 0.

Some schools use a 5.0 scale, which is common when weighted grading is built into the standard system rather than applied separately for AP or honors courses. On a 5.0 scale an A is worth 5.0 and the rest of the grades scale up proportionally.

To get the quality points for a course you multiply the grade point value by the number of credit hours. Add those up across all your courses, divide by total credits and that is your GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Which grade format should I use?
Select Letter (A F) if your school gives letter grades. Select Percentage (%) if your grades are given as numbers like 87 or 94. Select IB Scale (1 7) if you are in an IB program and your grades run from 1 to 7.
What does A− = 3.7 vs 3.667 mean?
Different schools assign different point values to plus/minus grades. Most US colleges use 3.7 for A−. Some use the more precise 3.667. Check your school's grading policy or ask your registrar. When in doubt use 3.7 it is the more common standard.
How do I know if my school uses a 4.0 or 5.0 scale?
Most US colleges use the 4.0 scale. The 5.0 scale is more common at high schools that build honors weighting into the base GPA. Check your transcript or academic catalog the max GPA listed there tells you which scale your school uses.
Should I include Pass/Fail courses?
No. Pass/Fail courses do not count toward your GPA. They appear on your transcript but contribute no quality points or credit hours to the calculation. Leave them out when using this calculator.
How do I add more courses?
Click the + Add Course button below the course list. You can add as many courses as you need. The course name field is optional only credits and grade are required to calculate.
What is a good GPA in college?
A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good at the college level. A 3.5 or higher is strong and will qualify you for most honors programs and graduate school applications. Anything above 3.7 is excellent. That said, what counts as good depends on your major, your school and your goals.
What GPA puts me on academic probation?
Most US colleges place students on academic probation when their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, which is a C average. Some programs or scholarship requirements set a higher threshold. Check your school's academic policies because the exact cutoff and consequences vary by institution.
Does a W on my transcript affect my GPA?
No. A W stands for Withdrawal and does not count toward your GPA calculation. It has no impact on your grade point average. However it does appear on your transcript and too many W grades can raise concerns for graduate school admissions committees or employers reviewing your academic record.
Does repeating a course improve my GPA?
It depends on your school's grade forgiveness or course repeat policy. Many colleges replace the original grade with the new one in the GPA calculation, which can significantly help. Others average both grades together. Check your registrar's policy before repeating a course to understand exactly how it will affect your GPA.
Does A+ count as 4.0 or higher?
At most US colleges an A+ is worth the same as an A, which is 4.0 on a standard scale. Some schools assign A+ a value of 4.3 but this is less common. Check your school's grading scale to confirm. This calculator uses 4.0 for A+ by default since that is the most widely used standard.
How does the IB 1 to 7 scale convert to a 4.0 GPA?
The standard IB to GPA conversion used by most US institutions is: 7 equals 4.0, 6 equals 3.7, 5 equals 3.3, 4 equals 3.0, 3 equals 2.0, 2 equals 1.0, and 1 equals 0.0. Select IB Scale in the grade format toggle and this calculator will apply that conversion automatically.
