How the final grade formula works
The formula is straightforward. Your final course grade is a weighted combination of your current grade and your final exam score. If the final is worth 30% of your grade, then everything you have done so far is worth the remaining 70%.
So the required final exam score equals your target grade minus your current grade multiplied by the weight of everything else, all divided by the weight of the final. This calculator handles all of that math for you instantly.
If the result comes back above 100% it means the grade you are targeting is mathematically out of reach with your current standing. That is not the end of the world. It just means you may want to adjust your target or check if your professor offers any extra credit opportunities.

Frequently asked questions
What if my result shows more than 100%?
It means your current grade is too low to reach your target even with a perfect final exam score. You would need to lower your target grade or look into extra credit options with your professor.
How do I find out what my final exam is worth?
Check your course syllabus. Professors list the grading breakdown there, usually in a table showing assignments, midterms, finals and their percentage weights. If you cannot find it, ask your professor or check your learning management system like Canvas or Blackboard.
My current grade is a letter grade not a percentage. What do I enter?
Convert it first. An A is roughly 95%, an A minus is about 92%, a B plus is around 88%, a B is 85%, a B minus is 82%, a C plus is 78%, a C is 75% and so on. These are rough midpoints so your actual percentage from your gradebook is always more accurate.
What if my course has no final exam but a final project?
The math works exactly the same way. Just enter the weight of that final project in the final weight field. The calculator does not care whether it is a written exam or a project submission.
How do I calculate my current grade before finals?
Add up the points you have earned across all graded assignments so far, divide by the total points possible, and multiply by 100. If your assignments are weighted by category, multiply each grade by its category weight, add those together, then divide by the total weight of completed categories so far.
What if I just want to pass the course?
Enter 60 as your target grade if your school uses a standard passing threshold, or whatever your school defines as the minimum passing grade for your program. The calculator will show you the minimum score you need on the final exam to reach that threshold given your current grade and the exam weight.
