How semester GPA works

Your semester GPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points you earned by the total number of credit hours you took. Each letter grade carries a grade point value. An A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, a C is worth 2.0, a D is worth 1.0 and an F is 0.

To get the quality points for a course you multiply the grade point value by the number of credit hours. So a B in a 3 credit course gives you 9 quality points. Add those up across all your courses, divide by total credits and that is your GPA.

Most US colleges use the plus and minus scale which adds a 0.3 bump or deduction. An A minus is 3.7, a B plus is 3.3 and so on. If your school does not use plus or minus grades just switch to the A/B/C scale above.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good semester GPA?
A 3.0 is generally considered a B average and meets most scholarship and program requirements. A 3.5 or above puts you on the Dean's List at most schools. Anything below a 2.0 typically puts you on academic probation.
Does semester GPA affect my cumulative GPA?
Yes. Your cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all semesters combined. A strong semester can pull your cumulative GPA up significantly, especially if you have fewer total credits completed so far.
What if my school uses a different scale?
The vast majority of US colleges use the standard 4.0 scale shown here. A small number of schools use a 4.33 scale where an A plus counts as 4.33. If yours does, the calculator above will still give you a very close estimate.
Are pass or fail courses included in GPA?
No. Pass or fail courses typically do not count toward your GPA calculation. They show on your transcript but do not add quality points or credit hours to the GPA formula. Leave them out when using this calculator.
