How cumulative GPA is calculated

Your cumulative GPA is not just an average of your semester GPAs. It is a weighted average based on credit hours. Semesters where you took more credits carry more weight in the final number.

The formula combines your existing quality points (your current GPA multiplied by credits completed) with the new quality points from this semester. That total is then divided by your total credit hours including the new semester. This is exactly how your registrar calculates it.

This means one strong semester can make a real difference, especially early in your college career when your total credit count is still low. A 4.0 semester on top of a 3.0 GPA with 30 credits completed will move your cumulative number noticeably upward.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my current GPA and credit hours?
Log into your student portal or check your unofficial transcript. Your registrar's page will show your cumulative GPA and the total credit hours you have completed. It is usually on the main dashboard after you log in.
Why is my cumulative GPA barely moving even with good grades?
The more credits you have completed, the harder it is to move your cumulative GPA. If you have 90 credits at a 2.8 GPA, one semester of 15 credits at a 4.0 will only nudge your overall GPA slightly upward. This is normal and is just how weighted averages work.
Do transfer credits count toward my GPA?
It depends on your school. Most US universities recalculate GPA from scratch using only courses taken at their institution. Transfer credits may appear on your transcript but often do not factor into your institutional GPA. Check with your registrar to be sure.
Can I use this to plan future semesters?
Yes. Enter the grades you expect or are targeting for upcoming courses to see what your cumulative GPA would look like. It is a great way to set realistic goals before a semester starts.
